To be able to navigate the obstacles and enjoy the benefits of your position in manufacturing, you will need a certain set of skills and strategies to excel. Whether you are a seasoned professional or new to the manufacturing world, working and navigating the industry can be both challenging and rewarding. Here are five essential tips to help you thrive in the manufacturing industry:

1. Safety Protocols

You should leave work the same way you got to work, in one piece.
Safety should always be the top priority in any manufacturing setting. Any machinery, equipment, chemicals, etc. can pose significant risks if the right safety procedures are not followed. The National Safety Council reports that there are around 490,000 workplace injuries each year that result in medical consultations. Therefore, it is crucial to adhere to any safety standards provided for your environment. Being mindful of your safety, and the safety of your team, shows that you are a trustworthy employee and beneficial to the team.

2. Effective Communication

No one is a mind reader.
Clear and effective communication is essential in the manufacturing industry. Whether you are working on a production line with colleagues or raising concerns to a supervisor, being able to convey information clearly is key. According to Forbes, studies show that for over 40% of workers poor communication reduces trust both in leadership and in their team. Knowing when to effectively communicate will prevent misunderstandings and contribute to your overall success in the industry.

3.
R
eliable Work Ethic

Commitment speaks louder than words.
Being reliable at work means more than just showing up on time. In the manufacturing industry, the reliability of an employee and their team is linked to production efficiency, product quality, and increased KPI’s (key performance indicators). One study found that, on average, co-workers were 29.5% less productive when providing coverage for an absent team member. Continuously calling out creates additional pressure on the remaining team members who still must meet the same goals. Therefore, refraining from calling out unless it is necessary is vital for the overall success of the team, and for yourself. Being a reliable employee will make you an asset to your team and more readily trusted for future opportunities.

4.
Physical Strength

You don’t have to be the Hulk.
The manufacturing industry can be physically taxing. Even if you are used to standing all day, you may not be used to repetitive motions or lifting in the beginning. Give your body time to catch up and learn the physical demands of your position. Engaging in regular exercise and strength training can help improve your physical fitness and endurance when it comes to work. Which will reduce the risk of a fatigue-related injury. Most manufacturing environments have some variation of physical requirements, so it is essential to prioritize self-care from the beginning to ensure your success.

5. Adaptability & Flexibility

Adapt, Adjust, Overcome
Manufacturing often requires employees to work in a fast-paced environment. It is essential to gain resilience and stay competitive, so you must be able to adapt and flex to changes. Being willing and open to learning new processes, techniques, and jobs will open doors for you to become a leader amongst your team.  Recognize the importance of teamwork, acknowledging that perfection may not always be attainable, but we can always collectively strive to improve. Incorporating these principles into your everyday life can result in personal and professional fulfillment within the ever-evolving world of the manufacturing industry.

By incorporating these strategies and skills into your daily work routine, you contribute to your team's success and pave the way for personal and professional fulfillment. Prioritizing safety protocols, maintaining effective communication, demonstrating a reliable work ethic, developing physical strength, and adopting adaptability and flexibility are all key components to thrive in this environment. Your commitment to these not only elevates your performance but also fosters a positive and productive work environment for you and your team.
