Building a resume is a key part of any job search. It is your chance to highlight your skills, experience, and education in a concise and professional manner. A clear, well-crafted resume can open doors in a competitive job market, making it essential to stand out and advance your career. Below are some essential tips for building your resume. 


Begin by listing your work history with your most recent job and work backward. Be sure to include the company name, your job title, and the dates you worked there. Use action-oriented phrases to describe your role and achievements. In fact, 93% of resumes feature strong action verbs like “developed,” “managed,” or “led.”

Include your highest level of education as well. If you have been in the workforce for a while, there is no need to list extracurricular activities or awards from early in your career. Focus on the most relevant accomplishments that align with the position you want. Remember, your resume should be no more than one page in length. You do not need to include every job you have ever had—just those that matter the most.


Keep your resume design simple. Over 40% of recruiters find excessive design distracting, so avoid flashy templates or visuals. It is also important to never include a photo of yourself, this is unnecessary and can even hurt your chances of landing a position.


Proofread your resume carefully. Bad typos or grammar mistakes lead to immediate rejection by 70% of hiring managers. Make sure your resume is clear, professional, and free of slang. Customize it for each job by emphasizing the skills that match the position but avoid exaggerating your qualifications.


Finally, ensure your contact information is up to date, including a professional email address and phone number. With 1 in 4 hiring managers spending less than 30 seconds on a resume, it is important to keep everything concise, clear, and focused.
