From arriving with an updated resume and dressing the part, to avoiding common mistakes like interrupting the interviewer or overselling yourself. Mastering the strategy of interviewing is essential for leaving a lasting impression. Let’s jump right into the tips that will empower you to navigate an interview successfully with confidence and guide you towards interview success.

10 Don'ts in an Interview

Do not...

1. Arrive late – Arriving to an interview early is best practice so there is time to compose yourself and prepare. Make sure to communicate if there is an emergency or the need to reschedule.

2. Be on your devices – Avoid answering or being on your device during an interview. Always make sure it is on silent and put away.

3. Interrupt the interviewer - It's essential not to interrupt the interviewer while they're speaking, as it can come across as rude or disrespectful. Wait for them to finish their question or statement before responding.

4. Oversell yourself – While it is important to highlight your skills and experience, be careful not to over-exaggerate or embellish.

5. Improvise – Avoid “winging it” during an interview. Preparing beforehand and researching the company will set you up for success.

6. Bad-mouth previous employer/job - Avoid speaking negatively of your previous employer or role, instead discuss how you faced and overcame challenges.

7. Use inappropriate language - Avoid using slang or inappropriate language when answering questions. Being mindful of your answers and how they are being said is key.

8. Lie on your resume – Misrepresenting yourself and your qualifications could damage your credibility and result in termination if discovered later, it’s best to be honest from the beginning.

9. Get too personal - Keep the conversation professional and avoid sharing personal details unrelated to the job, focus on discussing your experience and qualifications.

10. Focus Completely on Compensation and Benefits – While compensation and benefits are important, bringing focus to them in the early stages of interviewing can send the wrong message. Wait until later in the interview process to start the discussion.

Do...

1. Bring an updated resume – Make sure your resume is updated and tailored to the job you are applying for.
